Engineers Without Borders (EWB)

Engineers Without Borders Australia (EWB) works with disadvantaged communities to improve their quality of life through education and the implementation of sustainable engineering projects.

EWB works in partnership with developing communities both within Australia and overseas, assisting them to gain access to the knowledge, resources and appropriate technologies they need to improve their livelihoods.

Common issues facing the communities we work with include access to drinking water, sanitation, energy, basic infrastructure, waste systems, information communication technology and engineering education.

EWB also aims to educate Australian engineers and the wider community on issues of sustainable development and poverty. For more information visit www.ewb.org.au

Hohidiai

Hohidiai means "to restore" in the local dialect of the Tobelonese people who live in a remote part of eastern Indonesia. A horizontal conflict during 1999-2002 left the whole area in a state of devastation, thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced. Hohidiai now cares for the poor of this region by providing medical care, an orphanage and rehabilitation centre for TB & Leprosy patients. Hohidiai is also caring for HIV and AIDS patients and has a strong emphasis on educating the community about this illness. For more information visit www.hohidiai.org

Vulnerable Children in Zambia

KERO Farm is being established as a model commercial farm in the Kawambwa District of the Luapula Province of Zambia. Any profits from its operation will be used to support the orphans in the Beracah Orphan Care and provide employment to people in the local area. We are assisting them to set up the farm and to get it to the point of generating a profit so it can be self sustaining. A new strategy was developed that is currently being implemented to grow crops such as maize, beans, ground nuts and Irish potatoes to create some cash flow. Long term crops are also being planted - bananas, pineapples, citrus and oil palms. Research is being done into eucalyptus and pine plantings as well. A herd of approx 200 cows will be developed over a 5 - 6 year period. Currently there are 28 cows and each year more are purchased so that the herd is increasing.
